This year we have been on the look out for more economical sources of certain seeds. Edamame (soy beans) have been one of those seeds that are extremely expensive given the few seeds that come in a pack. A possible solution is to raid the bulk dried foods section at Whole Foods. Before we give up precious row space to this experiment, we are testing a few for germination.
The first potato has broken the surface! This great weather has been yielding lots of early surprises!
When we went over today the perennial plots were being plowed! It looked like a slow an laborious process even with a tractor. A lot of work has been put into bringing the soil back to something resembling farmland. We can’t wait to get dug in.
The first peas are popping through as well as the mesclune!
What a surprise we received yesterday! Four of our indoor carrots popped up from the soil. I decided to supplement the light source with a small grow light. Hoping to keep these guys happy and green.
We have finally begun some indoor plantings for our farm and for home. Mesclun was started several weeks ago and is just about ready for harvest. Spinach, cilantro, leeks, and pansies started 2 weeks ago and have begun forming their “true” leaves. Planted 1/2 of a new flat yesterday of alpine strawberries, leeks, spinach, dill, peas, and nasturtiums. After listening to Garden Guys we were inspired to try planting carrots indoors. If all goes well we should be able to start harvesting them at the end of April.
Today we planted the Collard and Kale plants bought from Applefield. It is really nice to be able to start putting plants into the soil. It won’t be long before we start eating them!
Today we visited our plot for the first time this year. This will be our third year on the same allotment. Hopefully we are getting close to eradicating all of the knot weed.

Using Make Magazine’s workbench plans as a basis, we built ourselves a seed bench for the basement this weekend. The goal was to have somewhere to hang grow lights to start seeds below and a work surface to pot plants and other plant related projects.
