    Saturday Harvest
    Sunday May 30th 2010, 6:57 am

Our latest harvest from the farm: broccoli, spinach, kale, & collards. All were started from seed. We had to pull several spinach plants as they were starting to bolt. Despite that, they made a tasty salad. The kale went into a delicious lentil soup. Yum!

This year we have been on the look out for more economical sources of certain seeds. Edamame (soy beans) have been one of those seeds that are extremely expensive given the few seeds that come in a pack. A possible solution is to raid the bulk dried foods section at Whole Foods. Before we give up precious row space to this experiment, we are testing a few for germination.

When we went over today the perennial plots were being plowed!  It looked like a slow an laborious process even with a tractor.  A lot of work has been put into bringing the soil back to something resembling farmland.  We can’t wait to get dug in.

    Today’s Plantings

Today we were very brave and planted corn AND tomatoes.  The corn is a little early, but looking the forecast for the next week we thought it worth the risk.

The three Black Prince tomatoes we planted today have the luxury of water tents to protect them.  According to the packaging, it should protect the plants to near freezing temperatures at night.  Since we have many other plants in the stables, this too seemed worth the risk.
